A FEMA PLAN THREATENS THE HEALTH OF OREGON COMMUNITIES
A proposed plan by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) could restrict land use and essential activities in 30 Oregon counties, threaten thousands of businesses and farms and the jobs they support – and put more than 230 Oregon communities at risk of losing federal flood insurance.
The proposal is formally called the Implementation Plan for NFIP-ESA Integration.
The implementation plan could negatively affect virtually every type of activity in flood plains – from building and maintaining homes to operating businesses to farming, road maintenance and environmental restoration. It will also burden already-stressed local governments by forcing new, poorly crafted and poorly researched requirements on planning staff.
Worst case: Oregon communities could lose access to federal flood insurance – with devastating effects. Federal flood insurance is one of the most important tools available to help communities rebuild after disasters. And without flood insurance, many Oregonians won’t be able to finance property purchases or improvements. Many may even lose property that has been in their families for generations.
Oregonians for Floodplain Protection is making Oregonians’ voices heard about the problems with FEMA’s proposed plan and the potential risks it poses to our communities.
